ANRML Achieves Operational Excellence and Compliance with CloudLIMS’s Cutting-Edge Material LIMS

Background

African Natural Resources and Mines Limited (ANRML), established by the African Industries Group (AIG), leads Nigeria’s mining sector with its fully integrated iron ore mining and processing plant in Gujeni village, Kaduna State. As part of AIG’s strategy for backward integration in steel production, ANRML utilizes advanced technology to extract and process magnetite iron ore, producing high-grade Direct Reduced Iron (DRI), which is used as a raw material for producing steel in Nigeria. DRI is set to replace imported ferrous scrap in steel production, enhancing efficiency and positioning Nigeria as a key player in the global crude steel market.

The plant, designed with sustainability in mind, includes a captive power plant powered by waste heat recovery technology, which minimizes its environmental footprint. ANRML’s operations are certified through Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIA) in line with International Finance Corporation (IFC) and World Bank guidelines. Through its sustainable practices, ANRML is not only contributing to Nigeria’s economic growth and global market presence but also advancing the country’s steel industry.

ANRML’s Operational Challenges 

As a testing lab, ANRML encountered several operational inefficiencies. Their workflow typically involves collecting samples from clients, registering them in the lab, and conducting various analyses based on the test requests. However, reliance on non-automated systems led to several challenges, including: 

• Managing various certificate of analysis (CoA) templates: ANRML required highly detailed and compliant CoAs unique to the mining industry, focusing on reporting precise elemental compositions, detection limits, impurity levels, methods, and more. They needed CoAs that could meet local regulatory standards while providing stakeholders with clear, concise, and accurate data for decision-making and compliance reporting.
• Overcoming client management complexities: ANRML faced significant client management challenges due to the lack of a centralized repository for storing client records and linking them to sample data. Managing clients manually through spreadsheets led to fragmented information, frequent data duplication, and difficulty tracking client interactions or sample history.
• Tracking samples and test results: ANRML lacked a streamlined system for tracking samples, resulting in errors and misplaced or mislabeled samples. This led to delays and rework. Manually recording test results increased the likelihood of data entry mistakes, and it was difficult to monitor sample testing progress or ensure timely testing.
• Managing invoices and payment tracking: ANRML’s manual invoicing and payment tracking process was time-consuming and error-prone. Without an automated system, generating accurate invoices often involved cross-referencing multiple spreadsheets, leading to delays, missed billing cycles, and occasional billing discrepancies. Scattered records made it difficult to reconcile accounts or provide clients with clear payment histories.
• Achieving ISO 17025 accreditation: ANRML aimed to achieve ISO 17025 accreditation, which required stringent documentation, data integrity, and traceability across their testing processes. Managing these requirements manually made it difficult to ensure compliance with the standard.
