Abstract: Proper sample annotation is the backbone of successful research. When you accurately document each sample’s details, from collection methods to patient history, you are giving your research the context it needs to yield reliable and meaningful results. For instance, in a study by the Canadian Primary Care Sentinel Surveillance Network (CPCSSN), detailed sample annotation proved to be a game-changer. By linking general practitioner data with electronic medical records, researchers could trace a diabetic patient’s health journey and identify trends in the patient’s body mass index (BMI), leading up to the diagnosis. This kind of insight could have been easily missed without accurate sample annotation. Without proper annotation, even the most carefully collected samples can lead to incomplete or misleading findings.
