Role of LIMS in Overcoming Biorepository Operational Data Management ChallengesAugust 16, 2019
CloudLIMS hosted a complimentary webinar titled “Role of LIMS in Overcoming Biorepository Operational Data Management Challenges”. A large number of attendees participated in the live webinar. The webinar was presented by Dr. Steven Haynes, manager of the Sheffield Biorepository, which is part of the University of Sheffield Medical School. It was a wonderful experience interacting with the participants and answering their interesting questions.
Biobanks play a crucial role in the discovery of disease-specific biomarkers, drug discovery and drug development. Biobanks collect, process, and store high-quality biological samples and associated clinical and biological data. Biobanks are also responsible for ensuring patient privacy. Hence, biobanks must safeguard Protected Health Information (PHI), manage patient consent, and ensure that biospecimens collected from patients are used for intended purpose only, for example, clinical trials, cohort studies, etc. Biobanks face several challenges, including managing biospecimens, associated metadata, and patient consent, standardizing operational workflows, preventing unauthorized access to sensitive data, and following regulatory guidelines such as HIPAA, 21 CFR Part 11, IRB, ISO 20387, audit trail, etc.
The webinar focused on the importance of biobanks in research, factors to consider when sourcing biospecimens from biobanks, data management and regulatory challenges of biobanks, and the significance of a LIMS in addressing the challenges faced by biobanks. The webinar also highlighted the significance of a biobanking LIMS in managing sample and patient data, assigning role-based access to authorized users, following regulatory guidelines, filtering records, and generating personalized reports. Furthermore, the webinar also discussed the importance of a LIMS in the cloud in minimizing operational costs of biorepositories and in ensuring no data loss.

Live Webinar: Role of LIMS in Overcoming Biorepository Operational Data Management Challenges
July 23, 2019
CloudLIMS is pleased to host a complimentary live webinar titled “Role of LIMS in Overcoming Biorepository Operational Data Management Challenges” on August 13, 2019, at 5 P.M. GMT (1 P.M. EDT). The webinar will be presented by Dr. Steven Haynes.
Steven is the manager of the Sheffield Biorepository, which is part of the University of Sheffield’s Medical School. Following graduation in 2003, he began his career as a scientist in the water industry conducting non-routine chemical analysis for water pollution control. Taking the opportunity later that decade to return to scientific research he became a sequencing technician at UoS, and then in 2012, the manager of the university’s Core Genomic Facility. These past four years he has been the manager of the Sheffield Biorepository responsible for human tissue storage and related HTA compliance, while also maintaining his other technical roles at the university.
Biobanks collect, process, store, and provide high-quality, appropriately consented, annotated biospecimens to researchers. Biobanks are an indispensable resource for molecular and genetic epidemiology, molecular pathology, pharmacogenomics, clinical and translational research. Biospecimens enable researchers to gain novel insights into the genetic components underlying a spectrum of diseases, test scientific hypotheses, identify novel biomarkers for drug discovery and to study drug responses. Biobanks face innumerable challenges on a day-to-day basis. These include maintaining infrastructure and equipment, managing large volumes of biospecimens and associated metadata, training personnel to follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), regulatory guidelines and best practices, at the same time, minimizing operational costs, following regulatory guidelines and ensuring no data loss.
This 30-minute webinar iterates the significance of biobanks in research, and outlines the regulatory requirements of biobanks such as HIPAA, FDA’s 21 CFR Part 11, IRB, audit trail, etc. The webinar also highlights the factors to consider when sourcing biospecimens from biobanks, the challenges involved in managing massive volumes of samples and the associated data, such as demographics, clinical history, and informed consent. Furthermore, the webinar illustrates the role of a SaaS LIMS in the cloud to securely manage data, follow regulatory guidelines, enhance operational efficiency, maximize investment returns, and contribute to the sustainability of a biobank.
Recommended attendees include Biobank Managers, Quality Managers, Research Scientists and Technicians.
